Are downlights better options?
Question:I am building a house soon for the first time. I have been asked about lighting selection: if I would like to go for downlights. They of course look good, but as they need to be placed more in number it seems they are expensive. Any suggestions about downlights?

If you compare the cost of the entire house with the cost of a few additional lights, there is no reason why you shouldn't spend a few extra dollars for better lighting. Downlighting is better because you are hiding the light source in the ceiling. This gives better lighting control and better ambiance. Have your builder install incandescent downlighting with dimmers. Always set your dimmers to 90% max. This will double the life of the light bulbs and will give your nearly the same efficiency as compact fluorescents.
