Ugly green kitchen tile!!?
Question:I am going to move into a home that has ugly green and yellowish tile all over the kitchen!! The walls and sink are green, the counters are a wood laminate, the floor is an old beige vinyl, and the cabinets are a dark color and are old and dated. What can i do to make this kitchen much nicer on a really tight budget?! Help!!
Answers:
You can paint the tiles! Check out this link to Better Homes and Gardens...
http://www.bhg.com/bhg/story.jsp?storyid...
*replace the sink (if thats possible) they are pretty inexpensive (around $20-$30 at Home Depot) for a stainless
*put down vinyl peel and stick tiles, they are inexpensive and very easy to lay.
*check out Oops paint at Home Depot (ask at paint dept for mismixed paints that have been returned) One persons nightmare color could be your dream color at around $5-$10 a gallon!
*give your cabinets a pick me up in a color that softens the look of the tile.
*if you don't want to paint the cabinets, update the hardware.
*update the light fixtures, try something large or slightly dramatic to draw attention away from the tile
*you might be suprised at how much changing outlet and switch plate covers can help (I know they don't hide the tile but at least they'll be new and updated)
If the link for painting the tiles doesn't work go to www.bhg.com and in the search bar (make sure you check "site" instead of "recipe") type in "4 Wall Projects with Glaze" it is the 3rd project called "Tile Turnaround" and gives step by step instructions.
Good Luck!
really tight budget. HUM close your eyes while in your kitchen
if your cabinets are stained then you could lighten them they do sell stuff to do this but it is time consuming.if paint paint over them paint the walls a complementary color to the tile then save up your money
Live with it till you can get on your feet and are able to tear it all out and remodel it. I'm sure you can add some plants and things to make it work for now.
The style of your kitchen isn't going to pay your bills or put food on the table. So it is more of a want than a need at this point. Unless it is unsanitary and you should have gotten the owners to drop the price of the house so you could remodel the kitchen.
If your on a tight budget, put the money back in case of an emergency and only get what you need for now not want.
Add some lemons and limes in a dark wooden bowel or large glass bowel, Hang some retro dish towels that would help pull the focus off all the green and yellow, add potted herbs and a nice throw rug on the floor to help tie in colors.
I understand your pain, my home has orange counters in the bathrooms and dark green linoleum floors. I sugget you look into the different kinds of paints that could maybe cover the ugly. They make paint that will go on any thing. Just have to do the research. For the floors, there is stick on tiles that you can get to cover for the time being. They work really good if you take your time and do it right.
