You can find the studs to screw into with a stud finder. Otherwise use drywall anchors found at local home center.
Use a stud locator to find the wood 2x4s in your wall. They will either be spaced 16" or 24" apart from their centers. You can screw threw the drywall into these studs to hold up your shelves.
Or, you can buy special screws called drywall anchors that can be used used directly on drywall. You can find them at any hardware store.

Most cordless tools will strip out the anchors.
For heavy shelves, like for books, you'll need a stud finder. Once you locate a stud, the others should be 16 inches in either direction. Mark the studs on a level line and mount the brackets to the studs. Use screws at least 1 1/2 inches long to get a good hold.
