I recently had a mahogany deck built. We stained it with Cabot stain. It makes scuff marks from the chairs.?
Question:Can I add a coat of something to stop this?
Answers:
You can add a sealer, like a non-yellowing, UVB/UVA protected polyurethane. Varathane makes a good one.
First, stain alone is just a color for the wood it adds no protection to the surface so it will need some sort of sealer/ finisher like polyurethane, tung oil etc. For an outdoor deck that will have hard chairs on it I would recommend a polyurethane for floors especially somehting for decks. You will need a few coats to really build up a hard finish and even then the scuffs may show after a while. You may have to try a boating supply store because some boats use mahogany decking.
It may be easier to just get some little felt or rubber pads for the bottom of the deck chairs than refinishing the deck. But definitely put some sort of water sealer or finish on the wood in addition to the stain.
