Is priming neccesary for painting a room?
Question:The color is an egg shell and we are painting it grey dark grey and dark blue.
Answers:
you should always use primer when painting a wall. it prepares whatever surface it is to hold the paint. you will get more even coverage and will have no spots that bleed through. and your paint will come out looking better. guaranteed.
Not always.depends on a few things:
What color are you painting over? Ifit is an intense color you may have to prime
What sheen is on the walls.
If it is a flat or an eggshell sheen then usually washing it with TSP will ready for painting.
If it is semi gloss or gloss-it helps to prime.
Are there any stains?
You should be ok since you are going with a darker color, however some darker colors require a couple of coats, if you decide to put a primer coat on have it tinted a shade lighter than you are painting, then paint as usual...
No .. primers are mostly used to make a base for consistancy of the next color or to prime over moldy or rusty kinds of areas or to save a little money going from dark to light because primers are cheaper than 2/3 coats of the paint. Primer over your basic white when your going dark makes no sence at all. Just consider the eggshell as the primer and paint away. For a totally cool look ...use oil based and use full strength 1 coat ... then make it 1/4 thinner and put on another then 1/4 it again it gives it the effect of depth .. I did this with 25 coats once for some rich guy and it looked awesome. It comes out with sort of a mirrior effect. Might not be to noticeable with only 3 coats tho. The idea is the layers become transparent and you see through to the bottom.
no need since it had an older coat, priming use to new wall to let the area sip paint so the next coat will cover the uneven layer of paints,,,, since you are applying a darker hue you dont need to prime it will cover the lighter color but you can go over it to make a thicker look on surface
no need to prime it when the color is lighter when you begin. only prime when the color under is darker or the color recomends it or if it is new drywall.
Priming is not only used to cover another color. It prepares the surface for the best possible finish. I would recommend it any time you paint. It will make your topcoat go on smoother and go further. It will also take care of any uneven spots due to environmental changes. You may not see the differences, but little things like sun exposure, things in the air and slight wearing could make the surface uneven. Priming will give you a fresh surface to work with. The best primer I have found is Zinsser Fast Prime 2 (waterbased).
