When mixing house paint what does X2 in the formula mean?
Question:I am tinting white primer to see how the color looks on the house prior to putting on the final cost and the primer is a lighter color than the final coat will be. The times two (X2) was on the primer can so I am thinking that it has something to do with making the primer lighter by half.
Answers:
Is there a "K" before the "X2"?
Paint formulas list the volume of each colorant used. Colorants are identified by one or two letters. "KX" is the identifier for white colorant. Numbers and sometimes the letter "Y" following the color identifier indicate the volume. A number followed immediately by a "Y" indicates the number of full ounces of the colorant, numbers after the "Y" or without a "Y" indicated the number of 1/48s of an ounce.
If your formula says "KX2Y10" for example, this would mean KX colorant (white), 2 ounces and 10/48s of an ounce.
I used to work in a paint store and currently am painting. The X2 you speak of may mean double the formula or apply 2 coats of primer, If it was meant to be half of the formula it should state that on the can.(1/2 strength or 1/2 tint)
