Hickory floor with oak baseboard and trim?
Question:I want to install a hickory hardwood floor in a kitchen with all oak trim, doors and cabinets. The oak is all clear finished (no stain) as will be the hickory. I'm tired of looking at oak, but concerned about how it will look to mix the woods. Also I plan to install a new kitchen island. Any advice on the finish for that cabinet? i.e. oak or hichory, stain or paint?
Answers:
the mix of wood would be very appealing.have finished hickory and oak...natural finish. i would go with a little bit darker stain for island but along same color base as floors and trim.or maybe something to match walls
gib mi sum wood.
Mixing the wood seems to be in these days. Both woods you talked about both show beautiful grain pattens. i think you would be very happy with the mix. On the island i would suggest doing a black burn through or some other paint trick. The island should stand out as your focal point.
no a dark oak will look great against a natural hickory. maybe honey oak. same for the cabinets or maybe cherry wood for the cabinets.
Wood in the kitchen island should be oak, same as cabinets.
Get a 'contrasting' color for counters and island top, such as gray with black and white flecked granite, or tan with brown and cream flecked marble.
If your counters are already done, try to match, or, get a solid color in one of the existing shades or flecks.
Add color through wall paint, and curtains/placemats/etc.
You have fantastic taste!! oak & hickory are awesome, they have amazing patterns. they can go on their own as design features--clean lines, very natural but sophisticated. that mix is great already. you can spice up with other pieces like kiitchen equipments, the ref, oven, etc & the kitchen island.
as for the kitchen island, you can go for granite as a great contrast for the natural-looking wood(oak & hickory).
For the cabinets, oak is superb!
Happy house remodelling!
