Decorating a really small bedroom with modern style?
Question:Help!
I have a small bedroom (maybe 10x11 feet) that I have somehow managed to squeeze a queen bed, a dresser, and an armoire into. I am about to redecorate it, and I want to make it look bigger without using colors I don't like.
I really like brown, light or dark, and other warm colors. Red is my second favorite. But I fear that red would overwhelm people in the small space.
The floor in my room is carpeted in white, and the ceiling is white, too. I can't change those things. I can paint the walls though.
Also-I have an alcove-like space in my room that I don't know what to do with. Any decorating tips for that?
Any tips you have on decorating or working around the small space would be great. Thanks!

Using a rug is a good idea. I would choose a 5x7 place it under the bed the long way across. Choose a rug with the colors you like. You could paint the walls a light shade of brown, or a tan color. If the rug has a print use a solid bed covering and accent the room with any color you want if you like red add red accessories. There is no law of decorating you can use the colors you like together. The alcove you could use a mirror there to make the room seem larger. The room is small and having large furniture actually makes the room seem bigger. The colors you like will make the room warm and inviting.
Paint the room a light reddish-brown, and paint the inside of the alcove a few shades darker. You can buy an area rug with a contemporary design with red in it for the floor (see link below; scroll down to the bedroom pics). Placed correctly, it can make the room appear larger. Put a tall plant or torchiere in the corner to help draw the eye up. And of course, a huge mirror on the wall will create the illusion of a larger space.
I would stay with beige and brown and some fawn colour maybe - co-ordinate them and get a good colour scheme flowing through. Shame about the carpet though - I would buy a rug in a darker shade and put that over it.
The alcove space should be painted slightly darker than the walls and possibly put a light in - a nice stand type one would look lovely. Or maybe you could fit some shelves and make good use of the space.
check out ikea's website. they specialize in design for small spaces.
Paint one wall with a mural, or paper-on a mural you can buy at most big box home improvement stores. Make sure the red you like is an accent color in that mural. Paint the other three walls very light tints of your favorite colors. There's a real nice tool for choosing color combos at colorschemer.com. BTW, don't fotget to very carefully cover that white carpet! Meanwhile, a makeshift desk might work well in that nook of yours. Good luck. ;o)
Paint the walls a cream that complements the brown you select. Take the brown to the paint store or bring an array of chips home to look in natural light.
Visit Bed, Bath & Beyond, Linens & Things or Stein Mart for color options using a brown theme. You could go floral, geometric, stripes or plain since brown is popular this year.
Pottery Barn is also a great place to look since it has classic room designs in soft shades.
I layered several colors including a beautifully quilted chocolate brown duvet and shams from BB &B, cream and off-white sheets, embellished pillows and off-white curtains.
I have a king sized bed, 2 dressers, bed-side table and Ikea closet stuffed in our current rental. Functionality is my main goal until we move to our new home.
The alcove may be big enough for a cushion in the window with storage underneath and curtains to match. Try a fabric store to see a pattern book with options. If it is not a window alcove, just put in a lamp and chair for reading.

I'd keep the walls white - it will allow you to bring in contrast with other things, which will give your room energy without closing it in. If you want to paint the walls, I'd recommend a light khaki color, but make sure you test it out (paint a poster board with your color so you can see how the light hits in different areas of the room). A few bright red accessories will really stand out and make an impact but won't be overwhelming (a red throw over the end of the bed, or red pillows for ex.) Mirrors are great in small spaces, and that alcove might be a good place for one. Give yourself as much storage as you can so that the little bits and pieces of life don't clutter up your room - in a small space, it just matters that much more that things stay neat.
I would do one wall dark coco and the remaining walls cream color. The bedding could be cream with gold, black and coco pillows. Have black picture frames around the room
