What does a boxspring really do besides being able to elevate the bed? Does it serve an additional function?

Question:I was going to put my mattress on the floor without a boxspring. It seems to me that they exist only to make the salespeople more money.

Answers:
The box springs are for additional support and allow the mattress to give through the springs in the "box". Your mattress will have a longer life and hold it's shape much better with the box spring and, of course, provide more comfort.

Be careful, using a mattress without a boxspring will often void the mattress's warranty.
Try it, you'll find out.
They add a little more cushioning, which you may or may not need. Depends on your preference. I've replaced a waterbed mattress with a regular one before, no box spring of course, and it felt OK to me.
