Pea shingle from Wickes is quite cheap
Grass seed is cheapest, turf is about £2.50 for 4'x2', so dearer but quicker. Any garden centre or B& Q.
Use pea shingle or gravel to cover this area to a depth of about one inch. A builders merchant will be the cheapest source and they will also work out how much you need and deliver it to your doorstep.
But first cover the area with cheap plastic bags to reduce the number of weeds that will grow through.
Shingle or gravel has the advantage of also being a security device - no-one can approach your property without being heard.
You may want to dig holes across the area to plant a few evergreen shrubs, such as hebes, that will just need cutting back once a year. If weeds do begin to grow through, just spray them with weedkiller.
