How do I go about adding a roof over my concrete deck??
Question:I want to add a roof to a concrete deck, that is attatched to the end of my house. The deck is taking up 1/2 of the width of the house, and I'm not sure how to make my peak, attach the post etc...
Answers:
Most jurisdictions require a permit if you attach the "covered patio" to the house. If you leave the "covered patio" free standing you do not need the permit.
Use post base for the support columns (Try Simpson ABA44 for 4x4 posts or ABA66 for 6x6 posts).
Use post caps for the post to header interface (try Simpson BC4 for 4x4 posts or BC6 for 6x6 posts.
Post thickness should match header thickness.
Header 4x8 for 8' span, 4x10 for 10' span, 4x12 for 12' span.
For light roofing without ceiling finish...
Use 2x6 DF#2/btr rafters @ 16" o.c. for 12' span
Use 2x8 DF#2/btr rafters @ 16" o.c. for 16' span
(FYI 2x6 @ 24" o.c. for 10' span, 2x8 @ 24" o.c. for 13' span)
Use 2x ledger of matching depth for joist, attach with 2 -(Simpson) SDS1/4x3-1/2" screws @ 16" o.c. (into each stud)
If you have stucco exterior pilot drill through the stucco and fill with silicone caulk just before attaching ledger and use 4-1/2" long screws.
Use LB26 top flange joist hangers for 2x6 rafters, use LB28 top flange joist hangers for 2x8 rafters.
Sheath rafters with 1/2" CDX plywood, felt, and roofing material.
If you mess up by doing it yourself on the peak,, and other stuff, you can have drainage problems.
Either call a contractor that does this, or instead of asking the question here, go to a local Lowes store, Home Depot, or a similar store and buy a book on adding extensions onto a house.
There you will have step by step instructions of how to do it.
one of the more important question is how are you going to tie into the existing structure or if you are going to tie into the existing structure. Such things as will you be tying into a roof or a gable part of the house
