What is this?? can i paint it?
Question:I have this dresser that i really want to paint but im not sure if it will work. Its real wood, but it has a glossy, clear, smooth hard covering. It is thicker on the top of the dresser. does anyone know what it is? and if i can paint over it?
Answers:
It is called vitra-laque. It is a finish for wood furniture and basically, it's a thick varnish.
You can paint over it. You can basically paint over any furniture, if you prepare the surface properly. Here's how to get your dresser ready so the paint job sticks properly:
1. Remove any hardware on the dresser.
2. Wash the dresser really well. Dry it.
3. Lightly sand the entire surface of the dresser with a fine-grain sandpaper. Wipe off the dust with a soft, damp cloth.
4. Because vitra-laque varnish is oil-based, you'll need to prime the entire surface with an oil-based primer. I suggest either Bull's Eye 1-2-3 or Kilz. Both dry quickly, are easy to apply and have low odor. Let the primer dry for 24 hours.
5. Apply the paint of your choice in any color that you like. Oil-based paint would be the best choice, but you can do latex paint. You will want to protect a latex paint though, with a water-proof clear protective coat. If you don't like it shiny, use a mat clear sealer or glossy sealer if you prefer.
Enjoy your new furniture!
Its a varnish. yes you can paint it but you will have to do a bit of sanding first to make the paint stick. Sand all the varnish and then wipe it down when your done with a wet rag to get the sand dust off. Then just paint. At least 2 to 3 coats of paint. Good luck!
Sand it with sandpaper to rough up the surface then paint it.
Sure, it probably has a varnish over the top but even if it was plastic you could paint over it .1 Remove hardware and clean dresser with mild detergent or bubble bath and water. Air dry. Pour some solvent like paint thinner/or liquid sand paper in a bowl in a well ventilated room, and wearing gloves. dip steel wool into the solvent and lightly rub over dresser to remove varnish that has cracked or is uneven. Rinse the steelwool pad in solvent as you work and replace container of solvent when it gets dirty. Allow to air dry.
Start with medium grit sand paper and then go to fine grit and sand in the direction of the grain. Wrap the sand paper around a sanding block on a flat surface. Wipe the dust with a tac cloth and use a brush or vacumn for tight small areas.
Fill cracks with putty, and when dry sand smooh.
Then apply a coat of "Kills" over any knot holes so they won't bleed through. Coat with a base satin primer acrylic paint that has been watered down Let dry overnight and lightly sand again. Paint two coats of the color you are looking at, sanding in between coats when really dry for a smoother finish. If you are going to paint a color, prime the peice with a latex wall paint diluted with water.Or use a stain blocking spray on primer. dry overnight. sand again, and wipe with tac cloth. Apply the paint color coat with a small roller or wide fine bristled brush. Do one to three coats lightly sanding between coats .
if u'r not into sanding... (which is the best way) then u can KILZ it w/ spray.. make sure everything around is coverd & windows r open & fan blowing the smell out UNLESS u can take the dresser outside. Then paint as stated from the previous person.
sounds like veneer..yes it can be painted over...lightly sand it and make sure its free of the dust and dirt..then paint..ya might have to paint it with 2-3 coats but it should be ok
