How can I make old bed comforters new.?
Question:My money is very limited now so I am looking for a way to make old comforters new. The comforters are in good shape but the colors do not match my decorations anymore.
Answers:
If you're handy with a sewing machine, go for the other ideas that people have given you here. Make your own duvet cover to insert your comforter in. If you aren't a sewer, then hit the stores and look for duvet covers on sale. The best time to find sales are about 2 months into a season, no matter the season. So now's a good time to get looking for summer looks that'll soon be reduced to sale prices.
Also, hit the Internet. There are some amazing duvet covers to be found... it's like having the biggest store around for linens.
If you still can't afford that and have a bit of artistic talent or has a friend that's got talent, get yourself some fabric paints. They are relatively inexpensive in craft stores and there are a myriad of colors to choose from. Prime one side or both with a solid color (I suggest a dark color if your comforter is dark, a light one if it's light). Once you've primed and covered the old pattern, use your imagination: the sky is the limit! Use stencils if you're less artistic. Have fun with the project. Really make it shine with your personality.
Or turn it into a patchwork quilt. Get yourself some nice sweaters from a thrift shop, cut them up and sew them in a pattern onto the top of your comforter. Finish the edges with one solid very large ribbon.
Wow... You've got a question that's not easy to answer... at least not in quite a number of ways... Let me know what you decide to do to your comforter!
Buy or make duvet covers. You can get coordinating fabric and you can take it off and wash it as needed.
Buy or make a duvet cover for you old comforter. You can make them from inexpensive flat sheets to match to colors you are using in your room now.
Fabric Paint. Add paint in colours that match your current decorations.
bye 2 sheets of the same size... if u can't sew then they do have STICTCH WITCHERY at u'r fabric store that u can iron the sides together. Then either put decorative buttons on the end or fancy ties for to tie together.
U could even make a design on u'r sheets if u want w/ fabric paint from craft stores.
that's what i did
To change the color of a plain comforter...try using fabric dye
To just brighten and give the fabric a newer look use some fabric starch.
Can you add fabric as appliques to your comforters to make them match??
Yes, I agree that buying or making duvet covers is the best solution. You can get fabric to match whatever you want, and different types of texture also. And it doesn't take very long to make them.
Buy the same size sheets and sew bottom and both sides. On top attach with Velcro. It should look like a large pillow case. Insert comforter and walla new comforter.
Well, one way that you can possibly fix this problem is by using certain colored sheets to bring out either your decorations, or the designs(details) in your comforter.
You could dye the fabric youself, buy RIT dye, the stufff used for tye dye, only just buy one color. Follow the instructions and you can have a new color. You can get RIT dye at craft stores like Michael's or Joanns.
You could also buy some fabric that matches your decorations and craete a cover for the comforters. Measure the comforter ad 5/8 of an inch onto that measurement for seam allowances.
Chances are, you won't find fabric in the right size, most fabric comes in bolts that are 36 or 42 inches wide. You could get creative and sew together different colors to make it the right width.
Also, you don't want an ugly seam on one side because you need to put the comforter in, so you could do it the way pillowcases for accent pillows are in the back. Then you could take off just the cover you made and wash that when you need to.
Try cooridinating your curtains to match just one color in the bedspread, you can also buy material to match and make a bedskirt, you could also take it to the laundermat and put it through a complete wash and dry in their large machine this will help detergent to get completely through it that won't in a household washer. This may help to brighten the colors in the comforter some.
go to ikea they sell covers for comforters, and ive seen them start from $19.99 on sale which is probably about what all the fabric and supplies will cost you to do it on your own. If you dont have an ikea next to you, you can shop online or request a catalog at IKEA.com Good Luck.
just wash it and it will turn new
All you have to do is go and buy what kind of material that you want and sew the new stuff on, it will look great !
What you do is purchase a duvet cover. Then your comforters can look like anything you want them to look like. This is only really worth it, however, if you're talking about down comforters. The ones with synthetic fill can probably be completely replaced for the same or less money as a nice duvet cover. Regardless, always smart shop. Check Ebay. Check Craigslist. Check Overstock.com, although they aren't as affordable on most things as they like to think they are. If you sew, there are patterns for these things so you can make one.
Go to a fabric store and cover them, you can also buy batting and stuffing to plump them back up if need be. Good luck.
Buy two flat sheets the color you want and the measurement you need to make a duvet cover.
measure the width and length of your comforter and look at the measurements of a queen and king sheet to determine which ones will work. (look for an outlet store for a bargain)
Stitch them together, stitch ties on the top corners inside the cover and on the corners of the comforter. Then when you slip the comforter inside tie the corner ties to each other. Then it will not slip around.
You need a duvet cover . It is like a pillow case for a comforter. You can make one if you are handy with a sewing machine or iron on tape. They are also sold in bedding stores and probably Wal Mart.
What about a duvet? It will cover you existing one and look like knew. They can be found at walmart, Lienens and Things, bed bath and beyond stores? Or search the web for them ebay, craigslist
You cant
duvet cover have always worked best for me
Make a duvet. I buy 2 flat full size sheets for my queen size comforter. It fit's beautifully. I also buy one matching flat sheet and make pillow cases out of it. If you want to go all out you can by a sheet set to match the sheets to. I don't bother since the comforter hides the sheets. I try to buy on clearance, that way I can afford the Egyptian cotton that I so love.
buy a new material or two bed ins and do the sowing.
Get very nice, cute, and soft bed covers and the same cover for a fluffy pillow. Feel Comfortable! Good Luck!

Cover them--that's what a Duvet cover is for. You just slip it on like a pillow case. You can usually find them reasonably priced at places like Ross, TJ Maxx, or Marshall's or online at www.domestications.com. Have fun!
I liked your question because it reminded me of when I was a very young boy. we were very poor and my Mother would take the old blankets apart and send the wool to a shop that re-carded the wool. Then she would recover the wool using old clothes that were cut into squares and sewn together. It must have been lots of work but they were always my favorite blankets.
you should use die and die it or go to joanns fabrics and buy cheap fabrics or take fabrick markers and draw on it.
