Who do I talk to in order to start a large remodeling project on my home?

I'd call an architect. They will not only produce plans, but will help you:
- Deal with structural issues.
- Code compliance.
- Find a reputable contractor capable of the work.
- Produce budget estimates and tailor the plans to meet it.
The first thing would be to talk with your city or county building department. You'll need permits to do the work, and they can tell you what you'll need to provide in the way of plans / blueprints, that sort of thing, and can probably give some information on the best way to go about the project.
I just went through 2 remodels, my bathroom, which was gutted and completely re-done, and a more minor upgrade to my kitchen. It is so very important to find a contractor that will meet your expectations. Try to get recommendations from people you know, ask for references and don't give up until you get some. I wasn't all that happy with my bathroom contractor. I kept having to tell him what I wanted, not what HE wanted. It was my bathroom! Some are like that, they fancy themselves designers too. Get multiple bids. Just to give you an example, I got 2 bids on my bathroom, one was $31K and one was $22K, big difference!. Do a search for "remodeling contractors" -some of them have websites with before and after pics to give you an idea of their type of work. Good luck!
an architect, and a conrtactor ...or find a design/build firm and go with them
All i can say is Direct Buy. If your spending more than $5000 on your home in remodeling then your should make an appointment to go see an open house. its a showroom where you can buy at cost so you can save 30-50% off of store sale prices. also they have every thing that you might need and installation is 20-30% off. i know that most centers have kitchen designers and other service staff that are knowledgeable about remodeling that can help you out with all your projects. there is a membership fee but it is so worth is to save all that money off of retail prices.
