I'm in process of building up my patio cover. Try to locate the stud but have no luck (with 2 stud finders)

Question:My sidding is hardy plank

Answers:
You're not going to find the studs that way. Why? Because the Hardy plank is on top of plywood/osb and therefore around 1 to 1 1/2 inch thick. To find the studs you will have to work on the inside of the house opposite of where you want to find the studs.

You will have studs around doors and windows and usually at 16" intervals. A good stud finder can usually locate studs through drywall. If this doesn't work to your satisfaction then I'd suggest drilling with a small (key word) drill bit about 1-2 inches in and probing.

I don't think a stud finder will work through hardiplank. Your best bet is to get a peek behind the wall, or come off a corner or door frame and then measure every 16 inches on center from there should be a stud. Otherwise, remove 1 pice of hardiplank at the bottom, mark your studs and replace it.
Yeah, I have a hard time finding studs too. I think sometimes you need to just give up:)
maybe there are no studs, jsut solid two by fours.
