Is 4 Days Too Long to Let Primer Dry Before Painting Over it?
Question:I am moving into a house but we are painting before we move our things in. So we go there a couple nights a week to paint etc. We primed a room on Tuesday and won't get back to the house until Friday or Saturday. It that too long of a period to let the gray primer dry before going over it with red paint?
Answers:
It doesn't really matter how long that you wait to use it. If it is a water based primer you will need to wait at least 4 hrs to paint over it, if it is an oil based primer, you need to wait at least 24 hrs to paint over it. But it should not matter if you wait "too long" to paint it.
That depends on how much humidity is in the air but it should have been ready after 24 hours...withdry air
It doesn't matter how long you wait (unless you don't wait long enough, which doesn't apply here). The primer needs to be dry, not wet, so go right ahead and paint as your schedule allows.
No it will be alright to go over with your top coat on Friday or Saturday.
Like the others said, it doesn't matter how long you wait before painting, especially since it's important that the primer is dry. However, you should make sure that the walls don't get dirty before you start painting, like if the room is near somewhere where you are drilling, sawing, etc. Debris on the walls between the primer and the paint can make the paint look bad. You said that you were only waiting till the weekend, so unless you've got any of the stuff I mentioned earlier going on, you should be fine.
