How do I repaint a piece of furniture...?
Question:I was recently given my desk and dresser from my childhood. The paint is chipping and looks old. I would love to repaint it myself, but I don't have a clue what to do. Do I sand it? What type of paint? How many coats? etc etc etc
Can someone tell me how? Can someone give me the name of a book or website?
Answers:
first of all sand it all down. Then wash all the dust and dirt off with just liquid soap and water. Wash and then let dry overnight. Then buy a good primer in The Home Depot. Ask for a good enamel paint to paint over primed wood in the color you desire. Also Rustoleum makes an all purpose paint for painting indoor and outdoor furniture and it comes in many many colors. If you want a special color, speak to the salesperson in the paint department and they will help you select the proper paint for the job you want to do. Also another idea, they have kits that give different effects to the furniture...ask for a brochure on that too and The Home Depot. Good Luck.
First of all you need to strip the old paint off of it, you can buy some stripper at any hardware store. then you have to sand it down first using some gritty sand paper then you use a finer sand paper then even finer until you have a real nice and smooth finish. Then you can either stain it with some stain using a cloth and wiping it over the wood, or paint it.
Do not try to strip this paint only for the fact that that paint could contain some lead, meaning not worth the hazard. Sand these pieces with medium grit paper and wipe with a damp cloth. Prime these pieces with an alkyd primer. Paint these pieces with an alkyd paint with some sort of sheen, I prefer a semi gloss on furniture. good luck.
Sand any spots that are rough, and sand the entire finish
lightly to rough it up enough so the new paint will stick.
You can either spray paint it or paint it with a brush. I have
done both. If you're going to use a brush, I would go for a
semi-gloss paint. If using spray paint, use flat or semi-gloss.
But it may actually be ok the way it is, unless you don't like
the color, because "shabby chic" is in style, so is the "distressed" look.
