I am looking for advise on staining my kitchen cabinets.?
Question:My kitchen cabinets are currently solid maple with a clear finish. I would like to change the appearance to a dark stain. Does anyone have any advise, lessons leaned or feedback on this type of DIY project? Any shortcuts?

Hi Nina, the first problem we have, is the clear, if you want to change the color, you will have to remove it, so the stain can penetrate the grain.
Way to remove it: 1) Paint remover = faster and better, but you have to take care of not drop any of it on other areas. follow label instructions.
2) Sanding= a lot of work, but may be convenient if the cabinets has not much curves and the clear coat is not to thick.
After remove the clear, you have to clean all the dust, apply the stain with a disposable white china bristle brush, leave it for a few minutes, and then wipe the extra stain with a clean rag. Let it dry very well, then you are ready to apply the clear, using a brush like before, apply a 2 or 3 coats of clear, very light sanding between coats with a 220 grit sand paper, clean dust after sanding.
Good luck !

Zar Stain is your answer. You can lightly sand these cabinets and wipe down. Apply your stain with a rag or foam brush and use a dry brush to blend in the stain. This process is the same technique use when doing a fiberglass door. Go to this web site to find a dealer. www.ugl.com/zar/... Oh, you will need to top coat these after staining with either a water based poly, or an oil. when you find a dealer, get his advise as well. lol
