How do I secure a doorknob on to a hollow door?
Question:I'm installing a new door on a closet in my home, and the door I've chosen is extremely light-weight and hollow. How do I secure the doorknow to it firmly without damaging the door? The new doorknob will lock to keep my small children out.
Answers:
In lots of cases the bore on hollow core doors have no "block" to hold the hdw. When the device is installed the skins start to compress and the screws bottom out too soon.
What is required are 2 pieces of wood roughly 1 1/8th inch thick inserted above and below the device between the skins. This will prevent the skins from compressing.
Get an unhollow door
the new lockset will conect to its self so just tighten the screws
If it is a normal closet door knob, it is usually secured by bolting into itself, not the door. The fact that the door is hollow shouldn't affect the way the knob functions or secures. If it is some type of knob that must be screwed into the door directly, you may consider buying a different knob or a solid door.
