Can I put varathane over paint on indoor stairs?

Question:I have finished painting my stairs to the basement and would like them to be a little more durable.

Answers:
If you used a good quality porch and floor enamel preferably an oil based you'll be fine you DON"T want them too shinny and slippery but if you want to urethane you must put water based down on either water based paint or oil based BUT YOU SHOULDN"T put oil based urethane over water based because the oil based has a tendency to pull the water based paint off, good luck Les the painter

no you can't

what type of paint did you use on the stairs? oil based? latex? depending on those 2 choices depends what you can pt over it.
LIKE EVERYTHING I WOULD CHECK A SMALL AREA FIRST. IF PAINT IS TO GLOSSY IT MAY NOT STICK
LATEX POLY WOULD BE YOUR BEST BET
