Moving into halls of residence: There is just a bed in my room How can i use the bed as a sofa in the daytime?

You'll have to contact the residence life department of your college and ask what furniture is in the room. They should have sent you some info with your roommate and housing assignment. You could also check the res. life section of your schools website. Sometimes they list that stuff.
As for making your bed into a sofa in the daytime, it will happen naturally. When people come into your room they will automatically sit on your bed anyways, as long as its not covered in clothes or really gross. Just make your bed in the morning and put your pillows up against the wall on the long side of the bed.

Get 2 body pillows, the long ones and get slips for them. I did it for my dorm room and used the "Bedazzler" to jewel it up and some bright fabric paint and did a lot of 60's and 70's stuff on them and then bought a plain black comforter for a twin and got some stencils and carried the design. You can make your own real easy and since your a guy I am sure you do not want jeweled pillows (lol) but you can make your own stencils for stuff you like they even have glow in the dark paint too! Best under a black light something Scifi. Add a lamp with a shade that matches the colors you used. Hope I could help. Have fun. It's a great stress reliever too!
Place the bed against the wall lengthwise. Then purchase a quilt to cover it and buy lots of throw pillows for the back to lean on and you have a sofa by day and a bed at night. Good Luck
place the bed along a wall, in a corner if possible, tuck the bedspread in tight around the matress and prop pillows up against the wall - viola!
Get the large body pillows. It will be soft and inexpensive
in one word. FUTON! there are so many different styles and colors and materials used such as wicker, steel, wood, and yes plastic/pvc. what ever your taste price range is up to you. any of the above can be used as your bed, when you rest. or during the day prop it up back to the sofa stage. If you must take your bed with you there, make or purchase lots of different styles and sizes of pillows that it can do dual duty as bed and as seating.
