Try second hand shops, The Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, Good Will. Also scour moving sales in your area. They are always advertised in the newspaper and Pennysavers toward the weekends. There you can get some great buys sometimes. Also go around your neighborhood the night before pick up day, as people throw out furniture, and so many other articles. I recently picked up two gorgeous wicker chairs made for outdoors. They retail for about $100 in the stores. They were like brand new and thrown out so I picked them up and they now are proudly displayed with decorative pillows on my deck. Big Lots is not the place for used furniture. Try these recommendations and see what happens.
Try Craigslist.com for your area. It's people selling their furniture. You could also join freecycle.org in your area.
Other than that, try local charity shops and yard sales.
my father and husband build ponderrosa pine coffee tables. they also build end tables. they are made out of good quality pine. worth the money. try looking at furniture shops, not stores. sometimes you will find stuff there.
Most cities will have stores downtown that sell furniture (used) very cheaply. They are usually tucked in the downtown area and you often see designers on shows going in and coming out with wonderful buys.
Remember things don't always have to match - be eclectic!! You can paint furniture - recover footstools, all sorts of fun things. If you can sew, that opens a whole new world.
For coffee and end tables, consider old steam trunks (air them out, paint inside and you'll have lots of storage) and get some plexi glass or bevelled glass for the top for a smooth top coffee table (or leave as is!). For end tables, you can even use old end tables from bedroom suites (drawers for storage etc.) and just paint them.
All sorts of cheap ideas out there and with a little bit of fun and paint you can create amazing one of a kind pieces you'll have your friends talking about!
Search Ebay under your local area or city. I bought my sectional on Ebay that way and I totally love it! I just drove to the guy's house and picked it up the next day.
