How would you divide laundry room/kitchen?

Question:I have a space problem in a rental home. The kitchen is also the laundry. Short of building a wall, what other ideas could be used to divide the space?

Answers:
It depends on how it's set up - in my apartment, the "laundry room" is at the end of the kitchen in a closet type space. You can hang a light curtain from the ceiling, even if you just use cup hooks to hang it. You could also set up some sort of folding screen. If you can install things, you could put up a panel (wood, bamboo, fabric, whatever) that's on hinges; it could hide the washer and dryer from view but move out of the way when you need to get there without being as permanent or solid as a door.

Build or buy a decorative folding screen and add a nice fabric.
In japan they would use a changing screen or room screen which basic are a series of tall light weight, opaque wooden doors or screens that separate room or could make a changing area in a bigger room. Fine woodworking has a whole article on them this month in their June 2007 Magazine.
