Sports
strippers
preferably female ones
maybe a one color theme... like everythin blue or everything green, or pick his favorite thing to do and put that everywhere
ex. he likes baseball--baseball pillow, baseball blankets, baseball walpaper that kinda thing
SUPER HEROES!!
Ask him what he likes and go from there--music, star wars, skateboarding, swimming, whatever interests him, you can build on. Let him do a lot of the decorating, too, to learn independence. Certainly not too young to paint either--let him go to the store with you and pick the color he likes, but then make him help paint it!.
Ask what his two favorite colors are. Do walls one color, bedding a second color or a print with first color in it.
What is he really into?
sports- posters, equipment, tickets for wall display
music- concert passes, CD covers, drumsticks, etc. display
supermodels - posters of favorites, and [empty] bikini tops with fake autographs inside them [ my son's idea ]
Give him either a skateboarding room or something kind of punk looking. I have a 14 year old brother and he is very into that kind of stuff. He has skateboarding posters all over his walls and he's into old punk music. Of course I don't know your son, but that seems to be the big thing for that age.

VIDEO GAMES! every boy loves video games!
buy some poster of them maybe if he has some old games that are not working because they are scratched use them be creative
The obvious answer is to use a theme that matches your son's interests. I would imagine you've thought of that and want to do something different. How about painting horizontal bands of color around the room. Get a color chip that you like from the paint store that has a few colors on one paint chip. Put the darkest color at the bottom, a middle range color (from the same chip) in the middle, and the lightest color (from the same chip) at the top. You can even do the lightest color over the ceiling. Buy a couple posters with your son's interests at www.allposters.com. Off the shelf frames at the local craft store will be an inexpensive way to frame them.
