What kind of paint do you use when painting a dresser?
Question:The top and sides are made of wood and have a laquer finish, and the drawers were already painted once and have a glossy finish.
Answers:
For the best results you will want to go back with an oil based coating. But you will have to prime the surface first to get the new paint to stick. Since the wood is already covered with a laquer finish which is probably oil based. Latex enamel will not stick well to it. So you will need to use an oil based enamel.
Since it's a piece of woodwork, the best finish will come from a spray paint as opposed to a brushed on coating. You can use a brush but you will never get the brush marks out completely. If you can find the paint in the color you like, I would use oil based spray paint that comes in a can. This will allow you to put sever light coats on the woodwork. If you have runs or mistakes in between coatings, you can use a fine sandpaper to work them out...after complete drying of course. And in between coats you may want to use some fine steel wool to smooth it out. Then put on a nice finish coat.
Be aware that home grown painting of wood is never going to look as good a something you buy. But you will have the pleasure of doing it yourself.
I would suggest using latex enamel.
Stain or paint especially made for wood.
If it's all wood, sand down the paint and varnish and use stain. It will look a lot better than paint. I just spent my weekend doing that and the dresser and coffee table looks amazing.
you cant paint on a finish, you will have to sand that down and completely remove the glossy paint and the finished area on the top before you do any painting. i would also suggest color paint! lol
if it's laquered or very glossy, regular latex paint will peel- Sand off some of the gloss or use a good primer. An oil based paint will take longer to dry and smells stronger but will stick better:) Have fun!
I use acrylics on anything. That's all I have really.
But I have painted my dresser with acrylics and it turns out nice. Try using acrylics on it and if that doesn't work, try a semi-gloss type of acrylic. I love the glosses, EVERYTHING shines! :)
dresser paint
A latex enamel paint would work. I've used leftover trim paint in the past, and matched the furniture to the trim.
