Can someone explain tinted primer to me?
Question:Is it just to prepare for red and red-orange topcoats or other colors? Is pink primer the only primer or are there others too?
Answers:
If you are thinking of using red or a dark blue paint, use a grey priming coat. I painted my kitchen and living room red and the pink primer did not work. The paint did not cover well and I had already had the issue with my son's dark blue room (took 6-8 coats to cover his walls to get the correct shade). We started with pink primer and saw we were going to have the same problem so I called Sherwin Williams and they suggested grey primer and it worked great. Two coats and we were finished.
Primer can be tinted to any color. This is done so the top coat covers better.
I painted my kitchen a deep purple, and we used a tinted purple primer, I'm not sure if it comes in all colors, but I do know first hand there are purple pink and white ones. The guy told us that tinted primer just makes it so you can use one less coat of regular paint, so you can still use white primer, you'll just need an extra coat of paint on your walls.
Primer is mostly white, if your doing a dark color, you will need to coats to cover, A dark primer reduces second coat
Generlaly primers come white for the most part. If you are trying to cover over a real dark or bright color, which are all deep tint based then a colored primer will help cover the material with the same application, as a white primer.
In case of a off color they might recommend a tinted primer to help the top coat cover better.
I gererally leave it up to the paint store to determine if I am better off with tinted or standard white for any given project.
