Can you remodel a condo?
Question:I mean as far as paint schemes and colors or doing things like replacing cabinets.
Answers:
The simple answer is yes.
It really depends how far you want to go with your remodeling.
Painting and decorating, re-carpeting, even replacing your cabinets, is always acceptable to your condo association (You may need building permits to replace your cabinets).
If you want to tear down walls though, you really need to find out what the rules are before you start planning your remodel.
If you live in a large established complex, your association likely has a set of rules already laid out.
If the association is smaller, or new, you may have to blaze a trail.
I am working on a remodel for a one-bedroom/den, one-bath/powder room condo in San Mateo, California, right now.
My clients wanted central air conditioning, hardwood flooring, and a gas range; all of which have been quickly denied by the association.
We plan to go back with a proposal for cork flooring and sufficient ammunition proving cork's acoustical properties to win the right to install it.
As to the air conditioning, they will have to do without.
And their desired gas range will have to be magnetic induction.
Some condo associations are very efficiently run by professional management companies. Others are little fiefdoms for the board members.
Attend a few meetings to see what you are dealing with. Even better to attend a few meetings before you buy, or read a few years of meeting minutes at the association office.
If you bought it, of course you can.
However if you're renting, it really depends on your landlord. My sister rents a singlewide trailer, and her landlord is letting her remodel it. He even lets her apply some of the money she puts into it towards her rent.
If by condo you mean you are renting, it depends whom you are renting from. Most will let you change the paint scheme as long as you change it back when you leave. Cabinets are a different story. If you have bought said condo, do what you want, it's yours. Renting, I doubt changes like that are permissable.
