Paint problem.?
Question:I live in an old house and when we moved in, the wood floors were painted an ugly blue color. I got the bright idea of painting my bedroom floor white and then was going to add black squares [to create the checkerboard look]. Needless to say, it never happened and the floor stayed white... Which has now turned to pinks and blacks and browns [from dirt]. Anyway, it's also started to chip.
So to the point, I want to repaint and this time, I want to do it right. What are the steps to a good paint job? Is there more than just floor paint that I need to use before or after?
Answers:
There are a number of steps you'll need to take to get this floor looking the way you want it to... but they're easy steps, so don't worry... you can do it!
1. Scrape the floor to remove any peeling, chipped or cracked paint that is already on it.
2. Using a sanding block to keep the sanding even and flat, lightly sand the floor with a fine-medium grain sandpaper. Get the block that you can attach to a broom handle... your back will thank you :)
3. Wipe off the dust and dirt with a soft damp mop. Let the floor dry completely.
4. Prime the floor with an oil-based primer. I prefer Bull's Eye 1-2-3 or Kilz. Both work wonders and you won't have to do more than 2 coats, guaranteed (1 on walls, but I suggest 2 on floors.)
5. Using floor paint, paint your floor following drying directions that you get on the paint can. Make certain to let the floor dry as they say so no marks end up on it before it is dry.
6. Keep the doors and windows closed once you've painted, to keep dust and dirt from landing on the floors before they are dry.
7. If you want, you can use a clear sealer for the floor... but if you use a shiny paint, you may not need it. If it is a high traffic area, then go for the sealer.
Enjoy your new floor!
First of all you will need to strip your floor down to bare wood. The problem with the chipping and peeling is that there was some sort or wax or urethane finish on the floor already.
There are chemical strippers available at the paint/hardware store to remove old paint.
Once you have stripped the floor, use a paint made specifically for floors, and give it at least two coats. Make sure to allow it to dry completely between coats.
floor urethane afterward?
