Paint color delima?

Question:OK, my brother (he's 25) bought forest green and dark maroon colored curtains for his bedroom. Now he wants to paint his walls something other than white...
I have no idea what colors we could use to match those dark curtains. He's willing to put up a chair rail too, if that helps. All I can think of is maybe a forest green or maroon accent wall?
Please any ideas?

Answers:
TRY A LIGHT GRAY OR MAYBE EVEN A LIGHT GREEN AND ACCENT JUST ONE WALL WITH THE DARKER COLOR OR YOU COULD EVEN DO A SPLIT WALL WITH DARK ON BOTOM AND A LIGHT SHADE ON TOP

you could go with a light grey(taupe)color and use a fingerjointed chair rail(fingerjointed cheaper than solid) painted to match the curtains to bring it all together, what color is the carpet? if it won't blend get accent rugs to bring it all together.
that is a weird combination of colors. tell him he can use lighter colors of the maroon and green family.
Neither forest green nor maroon should be used on the walls as they would both detract from the curtains and create a sense of claustrophobia (dark colors).

As for an alternative... a picture of the room would help.
Get a paint swatch book and match both the green and maroon shades. Then choose a lighter shade on the same swatch that your brother would like, this should be a coordinating color...same color tones, but lighter shade. Could also go with the dark tones, just leave the ceiling white to keep light reflecting into the room. This also works well if the woodwork/trim is white. My dining room walls are black, but ceiling and woodwork are white. The room does not seem dark at all.
awsome colors! sooo bamboo floorin...hmmm... so is he into being creative? Like Faux Finishing?

He could do stripes... either stripes all around or on 2 or 3 of walls. He could do them horiz stripes or vertical. He could alternate them big/small w/ added 3rd color like tan.

He could faux one of the wider stripes w/ either color & give it texture effect. I would do the walls tan then do the stripes in the maroon & dk green... OR

jst for a little contrast... make stripes in the middle or jst above the middle of the room w/ the maroon & dk green w/ tan walls.

If he really wants to put molding up.. then do the bttm part of the walls in the dk green about either 1/4 or 1/2 way up then to the top part in tan or grey then do the molding to match close to the flooring.

U didn't mention the color of his furniture so i'm assuming it's wood tone.

Then find himself a nice bed cover w/ those colors in them or 1 of those colors. If u'r lucky w/ all 3.. then he's done good.

There r many websites if he's into online shopping to ck for bedcovers. Can he get more of the curtains. He could use them as pillow covers if he wanted. U can sew or iron to make covers & go over old pillows. ( iron stuff is at fabric stores--ck out their clearance bins for material as well. )

IF he's into prints/photos.. then get frames from Walmart/ Michaels/etc then put several frames on a wall in a pattern of his favorite photos or prints. Get black or he could paint the frames maroon.

Get paint samples from the paint store.. if he can take his curtains.. great.. but get several samples of the colors he's looking at. Then put them on the walls. Look at them thru out the day.. chg them around... jst to c what they would look like in the day light & nt light.

Be creative! Have Fun!
I would do a cream light creamy white on the top of the chair rail, it being the same color as therest of the trim. Then use a a maroon that matches the curtain for the lower half of the chair rail. If you choose the maroon, before you paint it, get the primer tinted to the paint chip color you are using. It will make it easier to paint, and keep in mind that it takes at least 3 coats to do reds, it something to do with the depth of the paint. My kitchen is barn red.
Tan. I have similarly green & red colored furnishings & accessories in my home, & I used Glidden's "Dapper Tan." It looks great.
