Is there a way to bring up the detail on the older white marble tombstones? If so how?
Question:We have a family headstone that is probably 80 years old or better. The engraving is barely discernable. We want to darken it with something that will bring up the detail without damaging the old marble. Any ideas?
Answers:
Check with your local head-stone carver. There may be something that you can do to darken the background, or it may not be that expensive to re-carve the tombstone so the details are deeper. You might consider erecting some sort of structure to protect it from the rain and the wind so it doesn't get worse.
There are special products that are used for marble. Contact your local commercial cleaning product supplier. They are in the phone book under janitorial or custodial. They are always very knowledgeable and willing to help.
Marble is porous, that works to your advantage - what I would do is use a washout paint (dark gray) and use it where needed. Let it dry, and that should be fine, it should 'stain' permanently.
