Contractor, Handyman Pricing...trying to avoid getting ripped off?
Question:I am in the house business, and I use a particular contractor for several reasons. I dont want to negotiate so hard that people wont want to do work for me & i understand that you get what you pay for, so i dont want to pay a cheap price and hire someone that will stress me out to work with. I have a pretty general question, can you give me any tips on determining what is a fair price for both sides when pricing what it would cost to make repairs to a house. Whether its ppsf, or whatever.
Answers:
If you are dealing with the same people all the time, try a time and material pricing structure. It is fair to all. .
whatever the materials cost i charge the same and add 20 percent if a speciality job
A lot depends on the work that needs to be done for instance I can have two doors to be hung one with a nice square frame and one jacked out of shape the one out of whack is going to take more time so your piece price might vary when dealing with your contractor always ask for a itemized estimate if it seems too high start taking bids from other contractors I don't get My feelings hurt if I lose a bid I shoot for one thirded to one half of all bids I give
On most occasions labor costs as much as the material costs. In some instances slightly more.
I would use that to determine if its a fair price.
You may always ask for references to ensure that the person you are hiring is reliable.
