How do i get painted beams in living room back to original wood?
Question:emulsion painted over gloss i think someone suggested sand blasting but couldnt stand the mess in living room any ideas

You'll require lots of methylene chloride based paint remover and a scraper. This is an expensive method and messy and you'll have to be careful that the paint remover does not get on your other furniture or walls or anything else for that matter.
The other method is to employ a heat gun and a scraper.
This method is also labourious but much more efficient than using paint remover. Use the heat gun like you would use a hair dryer. It requires minimal contact with the painted surface to remove the paint. As soon as the paint wrinkles, lift it off with the scraper. Please do not use the heat gun on your hair. Also watch out for your skin, it can burn your skin off.
Blasting it with sand or water, is very messy.
Whichever method you employ, in the end, you will have to sand paper the exposed wood before varnishing or staining.
So you might as well clear out the living room and cover the floor with newspaper. Once done, be sure to vacuum the walls to remove dust.

They're a bit expensive, though.

I don't think youcan do it with out a mess, as stated above stripper and elbow grease, or maby try a sander...
you could nitromoors them but very messy, i would use a blow torch like thing that you can get to blister the paint then scrape off
heat gun is best done with a specialised scraper and some wire wool.
Hire a contractor to do it----take a week off and go on vacation and when you get back, VOILA, natural wood beams and you don't have to do a thing, smell a thing or clean a thing.
you wont get them back without Sand d blasting ..some of their methods today are not as bad as they used to be
With great difficulty, other than burning off, what about boxing them in with real wood ?
the only way is sandblasting im afraid if u want them back to there glory...as for the mess i think anyone would choose that rather than the tedious slow task of stripping then sanding..if u still dont like idea there r some paint and grain effect paints that if done correctly look pretty good..ur choice ur money and time!! good luck!!
yes that's the only way but the mess is not all that great if done by a professional thats part of the trade
