How do I get my butcherblock style countertop to shine again?

Question:My countertops are dull and scratched up..I have the smooth style, not the rough texture..Any ideas on making it look better...I dont have the funds to put alot on this project.

Answers:
Try wiping it down with mineral oil.

I will assume you have HPL, high pressure laminate, i.e. Formica, there is no good, durable way to restore HPL. The best way is to put new HPL on top of the old. Just scratch the surface with 60 grit sandpaper first.

The answer below assumes you have real butcher block i.e. wood.
You can sand it to get rid of scratches/stains. Then you can put a heavy coat of butcher block oil/mineral oil on it which you should do once a month anyway.

I refinished my butcher block with a hand planer which I got from Home Depot for 60 bucks. I don't recommend that method if you aren't proficient with power tools.
rub it with cooking oil
whatever you do, DON'T use butchers wax. it is not for butcherblocks. the inventor was NAMED charles butcher
