I think that's simply rise/run. The height of the roof divided by how far it is from the center (high part) to the edge.
A roof pitch is rise over run. Rise is the number of inches your roof goes up in one foot. A 3/12 pitch is a roof that rises 3 inches in 12 inches(1 foot.) An easy way for a beginner to determine this is to take a level, mark one foot on it from the end, put that end anywhere on the roof, make sure it reads level, then measure the distance from your mark to the roof.
As the others stated, it's rise over run. A way to get a more accurate measurement would be to use a 2' level (or whatever you have handy). If it's a 2' level, place one side against the roof and hold the level parallel to the rafters. (going with the slope of the roof). Hold your level level then measure from the opposite end straight down to the roof. (hold your tape as plumb as possible) take that measurement, divide by 2 and you have your slope. For example, if I measured 12" then I would have a 6 on 12 roof.
