What are the benefits of hiring an architect vs an interior designer for a major home renovation?
Question:The renovation will include completely replacing a kitchen and two bathrooms, cosmetic changes to most of the rest of the interior, updating the exterior, and possibly building an additional level on one section of the home.
Answers:
Employ an architectural practice with Interior Design experience as well. Architects have very strict contracts with builders, therefore any problems that may occur during the project can be resolved by your architect.
The fact that you require an additional level to your home makes the need for an architect even more desirable as all planning approvals from authorities usually go trough an architectural practice.
My advice to you is:
1. To have a brief prepared (sketches, drawings, images etc) when employ your designer/architect.
2. Make sure of an existing contract between you and the architect that runs from inception of the project to completion of the project.
3. Make sure your architect can give you extended guaranties after completion.
4. Do not interfere in between architect and builder, because that is where you are going to loose money. Usually builders charge double or triple the cost when forced to make changes on site.
Good Luck
b/c Interior Designers are Gay...?
but really, Architects will draw up the plans that you must have so that the city and the community will require. Its more of a one stop shop. An interior designer still has to have plans made up by someone.
Most architects will be able to give you solid interior design tips as well.
I think you need both, because you are building and I think the architect have more experience.
But nobody can design the interior or make cosmetic changes like a interior designer.
That's the rason why exist interior designers and architects, because are different professions.
Well personally I think you need both. An architect or atleast a draftsman is important if you are doing structual changes. However architects don't generally have much knowledge on lighting ideas and colours and flow and other important aspects in renovating a home. If your going to spend the money your best to do it properly 1st time!
If you plan on financing the project you must have an architect. Most lenders require the "Stamp" he/she will place on the prints. Also if there are any problems in the design of the structure the architect is responsible. An interior decorator is not responsible for cosmetics. Do your homework, talk to the city building and planning dept. Take no shortcuts it'll bite you in the end!!
