My house has brick inside the beams as insulation. Should I get rid of them and put up real insulation?
Question:My house is 100 years old. It has a wooded "bubble" frame. The people in my town back then were all brick factory workers and brick layers.
They used to steal the bricks and but then within the frame of the house as insulation.
I am in the process of tearing down the plaster walls to put up sheet rock.
Is it best to leave the bricks as insulation given the amount of time and work it would take to take them down?
Or should I take the bricks out and put up standard insulation?
I think after all these years, the brick insulation has become part of the foundation of the house.
Answers:
They are now starting to use cinder blocks for insulation so I would check it out. The bricks sound like they would be great insulation because they keep a more level temperature. Stay warmer longer in the winter and cooler longer in the summer. Also, I think they would be a lot safer if there was ever a fire in the home. I'd keep them.
Leave the bricks and just add a layer of 1/2" foil backed insulation to them since you are tearing out the walls anyhow.
