Painting tiles?
Question:When we moved into our house the tiles in the bathroom had already been painted with tile paint (horrible old lady blue colour). I now want to paint over them with a white tile paint (until we can afford to get it done properly). Would I be able to do this and what would I need to do to prepare the tiles for painting.?
Thanks very much for all your help.

Tile paint is very expensive and looks shabby...I would rather wait till you can afford to tile xxx
I disagree, ask at a local diy shop, or go to b&q, homebase, they should have leaflets on how to do it , what to use.
You must remove all the old paint first! Then 'score' the tiles to give the new paint a chance to adhere. Wash tiles with turps or thinners to remove all grease, allow to dry, then give the tiles two coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry well before re-applying. Have a great day.
Tile paint IS expensive so for the time being why not break up the blue tiles with stickers... They are great and in a wide range of patterns and colours... You wont need alot to make a good impression and will save money until you want to replace them completely...
tile paint isnt very cheap but it aint that dear either if u just give it a light rub down with a smooth sandpaper you should be able 2 go over it but remember you are covering blue with white so u may have 2 apply 3 coats
We painted our tiles and they DON'T look nasty! They look good!
As they have been painted they will have been primed. Thats the important and most expensive part. After that you can paint on them with standard gloss paint (a tin of tile primer will tell you this too).
You should only need to give them a light sanding to give them a key and then your ready for tile paint or gloss.
"When we moved into our house the tiles in the bathroom had already been painted with tile paint (horrible old lady blue colour)".
My question is ... why was the old lady a horrible blue colour ?
Give it a rub down and a clean and you should be fine. There is no need to use tile paint now as the previous coat has done the adhering to the paint part.
You will still want it washable though, i as a decorator would use 2 coats of undercoat to cover the blue and finish with eggshell or satin wood.
If as you put the first coat on it sises you may need to use a primer ,follow the link below to get the most versatile primer sealer on the market.
Clean the tiles real good>> do not use a thinner or "turps" your simply adding to the dilema to an oil film that are not compatable with now days water born tile paints...Sherwin Williams paint stores now have a paint that will adhere properly on tile..usually a water borne epoxy.if these tiles have ever been waxed..make sure no wax exists..after cleaning good, and letting them dry.'scuff" the tiles with a medium sand paper Usually 220 grit..do not try to sand hard, you are just scuffing the surface for better adheision..then use 'tack cloth" sold in any paint/hardware store to rub over the tile to get the sanding dust off... apply the paint as recommended
