How do I prevent watermarks showing through emulsion paint?
Question:I am painting hardboard with emulsion paint. The hardboard has watermarks on it and after one coat of paint the watermarks are still there. What can I do to get rid of them and how can I be certain not to have watermarks showing through emulsion paint?

Paint with Kilz, this will stop the bleeding, available at home centers.
You can seal the wall with a diluted UPVA solution then paint over it
Use a coat of stain blocker, and then paint over it with the emulsion. You can buy this from any DIY shop.

You can get a pot of paint from B&Q called damp seal and it seals the dampness in and stops it coming through.
try primer first
It is very simple - just paint over the stains with an oil based undercoat.

Go to your paint store and ask for insulating paint, I think it is made from alcohol and shellac , It will definately solve your problem. Some types are only in USA
Use a cheap oil based undercoat to seal your hardboard, Mix 75% paint with 25% thinners and paint . Then paint with emulsion a day later- this is also a good way of hiding all sorts of problems like baby's first drawings. smoke damage any indelible inks etc. have fun
Paint with gloss paint first. Wait until dry then cover with emulsion.
James got the right answer first. In fact, any oil based paint.
In 2010, oil based paints will become obsolete and I believe there's an acrylic paint that stains block.
