How do i make my room my own in a rental house?
Question:and on a limited budget?
Answers:
Painting an entire room is a big job, especially when you will be expected to return it to white or neutral when you leave. But, if you get a small can of paint and a brush and some masking take, you can add small bits of a bold color, which will be easier to paint over later. For example, you could paint a two inch border around your window in your favorite color, or maybe paint just the inside of your door. You get the idea.
go to yard sales until you find what you like.
yard sales and thrift stores are a great way to get decorations on a budget, especially if you like the retro look. Curtains/window treatments also go a long way towards making a apt. feel like home. If you have picture and posters to hang up, a neat trick is to use a regular stapler to put them on the wall...they only leave tiny holes when you take them down...helps get your deposit back.
If you're allowed to paint, there is a great kit sold at Home Depot called "Wall Magic" .. it has a split roller and split paint tray so you can paint two colors at once. It gives a "rag rolled" look. It also cuts down on how much paint you need. I painted a 12 x 12 room with less than 1/2 can paint each.
Contact paper also has some fun designs. You can wallpaper or do a border with it. It's pretty easy to remove as well.
Check your local Good Will store, yard sales, and even an old piece of furniture someone has on the tree lawn to be picked up by trash. Refinishing is relatively easy and inexpensive. You can also use contact paper to conver old furniture if you're not up for refinishing.
Linen sales are a great place to pick up flat sheets inexpensively. You can use them to make a sofa or chair cover and even window coverings. If you run a stitch along the narrow side of the sheet, you can insert a curtain rod and you've got curtains.
Pick up some stencils at your local craft store and you can make a plain lamp shade or piece of furniture match.
