Is it okay to mix hardwood floor types from room to room?
Question:Not only is it okay, but does it look reasonable to mix a red oak hardwood floor (present in the entire house) with a pale bamboo floor in a bedroom? We are thinking of tearing up the bedroom carpet and putting a hardwood floor in instead. There are, of course, doors between the red oak hallway floor and the bedroom floor. Is this sort of mixing aesthetically attractive? I haven't been able to find any picture examples of this on the internet. Thank you!
Answers:
It really depends upon the house. If it is historic, the bamboo would not really fit unless it is a very upscale house.
If it is a bit more modern, it is always acceptable to mix floor coverings. You certainly would not have a problem with having different carpet in different rooms. If it suits you, then go for it.
As I always say, I can't see it from my house . . .
I have a historic house built in 1842. It has white oak floors, red oak floors, pine floors, fir floors and cedar floors. It is very striking! Everyone has good comments about the floors.
I've been installing hardwood floors for about five years now and it should look fine. I've done floors where the homeowners use different colors in the middle of a room to create designs or run a different color around the outside of a room for a border. Since you are talking about using it in two completely different rooms, there would be no problem at all.
