What can I do with my kitchen walls?
Question:My kitchen walls have some sort of plastic paneling. Reminds me of acrylic. I have a lot of questions: Can I paint it? I obviously would have to sand it a lot because it is very smooth. What is under it? Globs of glue that would need scraped? Help!

I removed wood paneling from my hallway and I ended up having to tear the sheetrock off down to the studs because the sheetrock beneath the paneling was so messed up from the glue used to hold the panels on. I would have probably been better off if I had just painted it with a couple coats of primer and then another color, but I wanted to do it "right" and it took forever and was a huge mess.
There are inexpensive agents you can use (muratic acid comes to mind, but ask the guy at home depot for sure) that you can wipe down the wall with to take the gloss off. It's not really difficult, but if I had to do it again, I would try that and then paint over it. At best, it will be the answer you're looking for and your problem will be solved. At worst, you'll have the color changed and it will look good for a couple of years until you decide to change it again and then maybe take the time to remove the panels. If you can live with the texture (or lack of) on the panels, I'd say paint or wallpaper over them. Put in a wainscot or beadboard if your kitchen is that style - it will draw attention away from any imperfections in the panels.
Hope that helps. I'm not a contractor, but I tore out my own kitchen and hallway and rebuilt it myself. The only professionals I called were a plumber and an electrician (I know my limits!) ;)
I had a rent house that had this type of covering & painted it with latex paint & it worked fine .Test a small area with paint to make sure that it will work, but it sounds like the kind of wall that I painted & it worked great.
It's really hard to answer your question with out having seen your kitchen. In my opinion most anything can be painted with the proper paint of course. The main thing is how much are you really to pay out for a new look. Personally I love prepasted wall paper or stucco. I find that to be affordable and easy to create my new look.
I think you need to back up, have a cup of coffee and rethink this. If the finish is that smooth. It is like the finish on a car. So why not approach it the same way you would to repaint your car. Just a suggestion.
i can try to help redo your kitchen
you could tile the wall.take out the paneling , spread some glue then lay some ceramic or soapstone tile.actually soapstone is really nice stonework for the kitchen and bathroom.
