Help - I'm afraid Crack heads will break in?
Question:Just bought a house in an area where I saw three drugies hanging out. I'm re-doing everything in the house and installing new appliances, light fixtures, and central air/heat (copper pipes)
Don't want to put bars on windows (ugly) How can I secure my property. They will try to break in. TRUST ME!

Off the top of my head...
Plant thorny bushes below windows.
Install a remotely monitored alarm system.
Get lower level windows replaced with ones that offer break-resistant glass.
Install outdoor lighting and put it on a light-sensor so they light up your exterior after dark.
Meet and talk with your new neighbors. If they see you as nice and friendly they're more apt to report suspicious activity on your property.
Remember when installing door locks that a locked door is only as strong as the door jam. Locks typically don't break when kicked in. The wood in the door or door frame gives way first.
How about installing an alarm system or make sure you have good locks on the windows and doors. Put up signs that say beware of dog so they think you have a big dog. Or you could install cameras so that if they do break in you have the evidence and they can be locked up. Get a sign that says detected by adt (alarm company) most alarm company has them readily available. Not many ppl will break in if they see this sign. Good luck
instal one of those security systems that alarms the company who then calls you to make sure your ok...if you do not answer or tell them someone broke in...they will stay on the line with you and notify the police.

Home owners insurance iron gate watch dog and shot gun... Personally I'd re consider if you let it go back without it having been taken I don't think it effects your credit. I could be wrong.
I'd go stay somewhere else and rent that one out. If they want you that bad they will drive you out. So do them before they do you? :} This is one I'm glad I'm not in sorry.
If you are spending money on an up grade contact security companies and locksmiths to see what they recommend for your circumstances.
There are some good screens that don't look like bars.
