Why do we have screw & bayonet lightbulbs - why just not stick with one!?
Question:Is annoying when you have the wrong kind!
Answers:
It wasn't all that long ago that the dominant light fitting you would find for domestic use in the UK was the bayonet, it's only in recent years that the screw has started edging in. It's probably to cut down production costs, since the screw is more common on the continent, manufacturers can save money (and therefore retailers) by only making or stocking one type and selling it accros the entire continent.
yeah good question. must be a reason. will wait for more answers.
Could be for the same reason that we have several flavors of ice cream or many different types of cars. People like to have things different. May also be a technical reason that I have no idea about.
I think it started when the electric companies used to put out direct current 110 v, and later changed to alternating current 240v. it was to differentiate between the voltage of bulbs. Then companies realised that most light fittings in homes were bayonet so installed screw fit bulbs to their premises to stop theft of the bulbs

Mainly historical, ES ( Edison screw ) were used in USA at the beginning, We stuck with bayonet. In the USA they make ES with Left hand threads to stop theft from government departments. Bayonet type are considered safer because they don't have a live sleeve like ES
