Carpet vs. Wood Floors?

Question:I am interested in ripping up the carpet in my bedroom and finishing the wood floors that are underneath. The problem is, the room is naturally cold in the winter and I'm not sure if having floors is a good idea. How much warmer (on avg) is a room with carpet than a room with wood floors?

Thanks.

Answers:
Wood is a reasonable insulator. It will not feel very cold. I would go with the wood floors. I think they look nicer, stay looking nice longer, and are a lot easier to clean (especially if you have pets). If you want, you can put in some area rugs in key areas.

i have hardwood floors, and i dont have a problem with them during winter----but if you, just wear socks?

hardwood is much better than carpet in my opinion.
I would say about 5 degrees cooler... but wood floors are so nice! Invest in a nice pair of slippers to keep warm and to keep your bare feet from hurting (wood floors will do that).
a possible solution is heated hardwood floors. My sister has them and they work great. its fairly expensive though so you may have to decide whats more important, cost or comfort
carpet may be a Lil warmer, but Hdwd lasts longer, looks better and cleans up faster.
with the proper underlayment, cloths and installation, you should have a floor that you can't feel the difference and it will acclimate soon enough.

get prefinished, you don't want a lot of sawdust around to get into all your computers and HI-FI equipt.

plus its instant
There is no average to answer this question.

It depends upon how good the ventilation is, and how wide the gap is between the floorboards. Carpet and underlay form a cushion and insulation layer, polished floorboards if laid correctly and tight to each other should be free of draughts also. A laminate floor, engineered wood or solid wood floor should also be draught free.

The real question you need to ask yourself is " Are my floorboards in good enough condition to sand and polish" ?

The tog rating of most underlays ranges from about 1.15 to about 1.7. The tog ratings on carpets can vary tremendously depending upon selection anywhere from about .4 tog to 2.2

This rating is in fairness only strictly relevant for use in underfloor heating. It just depends upon if you want to step bare feet onto a soft flooring or a hard one. Remember what is good at insulating in winter will still insulate in summer, what is nice and cool in summer is freezing cold in winter.
I had carpet over hardwood. decided to rip up the carpet and found soo much dirt and mold underneath no wonder we were sick! and we did clean and shampoo it a lot! so i say NOOOOOOO to carpets!
