I'm remodeling my kitchen & need opinions on cabinets!?
Question:I'm finally getting rid of my 1961 kitchen and can't make up my mind! I have hard oak floors throughout the house..including the dining room which is open to the kitchen. I'd like to put in cork floors (& be somewhat "green" in my remodeling) in the kitchen and think it would blend nice with the oak floors (unless someone thinks of something else?) I can't decide what would look better..maple or natural cherry cabinets. The kitchen is only 10x13 and will be putting in 40" cabinets since I have a cathedral ceiling...does cherry and oak clash? Too much natural wood tones going on? I'd like to put a apron front / farm sink in, granite countertops and tin backsplash..those I do know I want... I need a professional designer but that's definately not in the budget. All opinions and suggestions are welcome.I have to order cabinets within 2 weeks! Thanks All !!
Answers:
cork is not a good idea for a kitchen floor ,it is too porous and the kitchen is too high traffic,,stick with the oak since it is also in the dining room and it is barrier free, maple if stained the correct color would work ,but i personally would reccomend enameled cabinets ,then you would not have too much wood, and use the granite to tie the floor and cabinetry together.
you have too much wood going on there. cmon don't afraid to try something new! be modern!
My opinion: I think cherry and oak would clash. I think maple or oak would be better.
You can go to cabinet stores and ask. This service is free at most stores.
My wife and I are just wrapping up a 2 month kitchen remodel. We have a 10 x 10 kitchen. It had a dropped ceiling that we raised to 8 '. Since your kitchen is a small space like ours, I would recommend a light color palate to keep it feeling roomier. Both the woods you are thinking of are lighter in tone but I would go with oak since it is lightest. Make sure you choose a light finish no matter which wood. The cork can be nice but it is awfully dark. We went with a light Italian porcelin tile. Good luck.
Do you want to have an open feeling in your kitchen or a cozy, more closed in feeling? I think both cherry and maple cabinets would go nicely with the kitchen. Since the kitchen is small, putting in maple cabinets would make the room lighter and feel bigger. Hope this helps!
