How can I make the most of a small bedroom?

Question:I have a small room 12ft by 6ft, with the door and window being either end on the 6ft walls. The shape and location of these make it difficult to make the most of the space. I have a boyfriend who stays over sometimes so I need some form of double bed, I have a single bed that pulls out to make a double, but it is a bit awkward. I have no furniture at the moment and a lot of stuff to get in the room. Anyone got any ideas? Where is the best place to get furniture to fit?

Paint the room light so it gives the impression of space. Also would it be a good idea to get a type of futon fold up bed so you can gain space that way..

You could start by changing the door so it opens outwards!
You can build a double bed up high and have your furniture under it i did this when i lived at home and its much better coz u have more floor space and your ladders to your bed can go behind the door at the foot of the bed as this is wasted space anyway
put in some big windows and some mirrors will do
That IS tight! The only thing I can see that works, is to have the bed with one side tight against a long wall with the foot about 30" from door (opens out-right?). Then you have a little space at the head of bed for a dresser and seating by the window.

Actually, I would use a good futon with a 9" thick mattress (I have one in my guest room which is very comfortable-much better than folding beds). If you go that route, buy a cheap/plain frame and spend the $ on the mattress.
Install a pocket door. I recently did it in a small bathroom and it made a world of difference. Without the door always in the way, I was able to install a good size vanity.
Go to IKEA! They specialize in small rooms, so you can get one of those full size bunk beds with the desk underneath. They make them for adults, not jsut for kids! And they'll have a lot of space saving ideas in the form of wall hanging stuff.
Have a word with Doctor Who, he seems to make his small space work like a dream!!
That is tight! My suggestion for furniture would be a wallbed. It will give you a chance to fit more in the room and to make the most of the space.

As mentioned by the others, make sure the door opens outwards into the hallway, use blinds instead of curtains as they can really fill up a room, use light colours to make it feel spacious, but use colour accents to make it feel warm.

Good luck!
I know this is going to sound obvious, but we encountered a similar problem in a former house. OPEN THE DOOR OUTWARDS If it is not possible, reverse the door so that the hinges are on the other side..
Try an up and over door it may help. as for beds!, get bunk beds your boy friend can be on top!, No on second thoughts you on top, that's much better.
firstly you can buy double bed that foldup against the wall, making sure it will be hinged on its length, you can then use the remaining length to fit wardrobes, thereby creating a corridor down one side. try to imagine a normal bed with cabinets on both sides, with bridging units over the headboard, same principal, but you have to use the length
of the bed instead of the width inbetween the cabinets
