Can you paint over a popcorn ceiling or will it peel off as you paint?

Question:I plan on painting the kitchen ceiling but worry that the paint
will soften the popcorn on there already. I'm at a standstill.

Answers:
Been in this trade many years and pop corn ceilings are ALWAYS tricky!! If you take a damp rag and gently wipe a little area where the ceiling meets the wall and it comes off pretty easy your in trouble. WHY, because most contractors cheated and didn't prime the bare sheetrock resulting in the texture coming down if this is the case you must prime with a quick dry oil based primer and let dry and then paint. Use a 1/2" roller nap and when done with your ceiling throw it away, don't try to save it cause you'll never get the texture out of it. The key is take your time and don't stop once you've started you have to finish, phone rings don't answer keep going cause it will come down if you leave it and go back into it, this type of ceiling is scary even for a pro like me, Good luck Les the painter

yes you can
How about using some type of a spray painter?
you have to spray the paint on.
You can roll it. I have (and I hated it). Some of the texture comes off and gets stuck in the paint but it all works out in the end. My results were fine. Wear eye protection. Also, you can get the texture in a spray can if you nee to touch up anywhere.
Use a big fluffy roller, and wear a cap. Some popcorn might come off, but not enough to make a difference. I have done it more times than I care to think about.
