I want to save my existing carpet but I want to upgrade the pad. Any suggestions?

shouldn't be a problem if carpet is in good shape and not glued down good idea to give it agood cleaning then start lifting at one corner separating from tack strip roll it up to one side of room remove exposed pad vacuum floor replace pad roll carpet bac down lift opposite end repeat process to remove pad left under roll then get a stretcher restretch and re attach carpet to tack strips ( you may want to replace tack strips before replacing carpet ) acarpet layer could do this job for you reasonably fast and easy.
you could have the carpet dyed to change the colour scheme and make it look new again
