Painting metal lawn furniture...any tips?
Question:

I just refinished mine over the last two weeks. Here are some tips. Do NOT use any of the Hammerite products for metal. I just repainted the furniture 2 years ago with it and already it was rusting, peeling, fading and performing poorly. I used the Rustoleum primer which encapsulates rust and the the finish Rustoleum rust inhibiting paint on a wrought iron fountain 2 years ago and it is exposed to water constantly, doesn't rust, fade or peel. So I used it again this time on the furniture. I used a wire brush attached to my drill to remove all of the peeling paint and rust first. Then, I used the Rustoleum primer, waited 24 hours and then used the Rustoleum textured rust inhibiting paint, one coat did it. Just be sure to rotate the furniture around because you think you have everything covered until you change the orientation of the furniture. Also, I got one of the $1.99 spray paint triggers and it makes the job so much easier. Your finger doesn't get so tired, you don't get as many drips and runs because you keep better distance. Also, try not to paint in high humidity because the paint takes longer to cure.

Sears sells a rust inhibitor primer you should start with then two top coats of exterior paint.
Go over it with a metal brush to remove rust and other gunk stuck on it (in my case, lots 'o bird poop). Spray with a metal primer and then use a coat of glossy enamel spray paint if you want it shiney. I personally prefer just the muted primer.
Make sure it's clean and completely dry. Let the paint dry in a warm, dry, shaded place. Direct sun can cause bubbling.
