What colour to paint dark panelling in basement recroom?
Question:We've just purchased our 1st home... (YAY)
The basement has a huge, awesome recroom with a bar...
Problem is, its all ugly dark panelling.
What colour would you suggest I paint it... There are some windows that allow light to come in... I like bright colours, was going to do red, but hubby doesn't want that colour.
Our furniture is a hunter green with flecks of beige & burgundy..
Would like something light and fun... (we have 2 boys so something to camoflauge fingerprints would be good)
Please don't say white or beige... I HATE white

I'd go with a nice bright green like Sherwin Williams' "Haven" or "Nurture Green".
Go to their "Color Visualizer" and have fun "painting" your walls!
Paint it whatever color you would like but be sure to lightly sand the paneling and put a primer on it or your paint wont stick to the walls!
First of all hate to say this but with dark panaling you have to do white first so any other color will come out nice then you let the kids finger paint it with an asortment of colour then u and hubby can each choose colours u like. The upside is you will always have that pitcher the kids made you. and you all will have lots of fun doing it and its a great memory
Why not yellow or orange or yellow and orange stripes?
Your best bet though is to paint it with Kilz first so that dark paneling doesn*t bleed through later.
Or maybe try a small wall with the colors without using Kilz first to see if it is going to work, Test for a couple of weeks to be sure it won*t bleed through (and to see if you like the colors) Hope this helps.
We have painted the dark paneling in several of our rental units. We washed them down with ammonia and water, rinsed by hand as in sponge. let dry. sanded . then we primed . we put two coats of primer on and painted the walls eggshell white. This keeps the rooms bright and is easier to repaint as the tenants change. You can paint the walls any color you and husband decide on.
